Practical Life Handout - Professional Development and Parent Education Resource

Practical Life is one of the pillars of a Montessori education. Yes, we can and should prepare the child to feel academically and intellectually prepared for life, but it is equally important that they learn to function independently and communicate respectfully and effectively. 

Maria identified four primary tenets of Practical Life:

• Care of Environment
• Care of Self
• Control of Movement
• Grace and Courtesy

In the 3-6 environment, Practical Life is a core component of the curriculum and works are purposefully created and placed on shelves to help the child reach milestones for each of the four tenets. However, it’s just as important to continue teaching and emphasizing practical life skills as the child moves through the 6-9 and 9-12 planes of development. 

These handouts are a wonderful resource for staff professional development sessions or parent education events.
